Looks like, for now anyway, Thorn Tree - the chat forum of Lonely Planet, has been suspended. Watch out Samaritans ! !

as it has come to our attention that a number of posts do not conform to the standards of the Lonely Planet website

Huh. Did they finally notice the spammers running rampant, or what's up with that?

Sounds like it must be something pretty serious to have to close it down for this length of time.

I think the Beeb maybe has started to panic a bit. No moderators over Christmas and all the abuse that goes on there by a very small minority eh? I guess maybe only time will tell. I have been a member on Thorn Tree for 7 years. I've seen so many people come and go, including moderators - but this does seem a bit more serious.

Just strolling around the web for the last hour or so and Lonely Planet has removed it's Google link to Thorn Tree altogether (in the UK anyway). There are now 20 or so links to speculation as to why it's closed down, including a few from disgruntled Thorn Tree members. It's shut-down has hit the news around the globe.
Has anyone here seen the press report (Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree discussion boards shut down after posts ) at news.com.au?
It's a tough cookie.

Just read up on it here. Interested to know how long they will lock users out.

The fact that it is closed down for such a long period of time, means they just don't have the people to normally moderate, like TP has...;)

Ok, it is a lot bigger and apparently 16 years old (the forum looks 16 years old as well by the way, and painfully slow as well sometimes), but moderating like here on TP could also be possible over there, just on a bigger scale.

There are some real *ssholes over there and lots of answers are like 'see this post, do some research yourself first etc etc', which is so stupid as that is what a forum is about, even if answering questions for the gazillioned time!

On the other hand, for information about virtually any place on Earth it is/was a good forum and I have to admit that compared to here, almost every country had quite a decent amount of posts. But hey, you can find things elsewhere as well probably and TP still is the friendliest travel forum;)

Found this....

It gets interesting about half way down.
Totally agree with what 'Utrecht' says about how 16 years old it looks ! !

I find it strange. The reasons that have been given don't seem to stack up for me.. if it's down to a few threads, wouldn't you just shut down those threads?

Oh well, welcome to any and all the newcomers from TT :)

Thank-you, me being one of them. Like 'Utrecht' says, it is/was a good forum.
My suspicions are, a very lack lustre team of moderators and as mentioned by 'Peter', why not just shut the dodgy threads down? Still, each to their own, I suppose.
