My husband and I will have be arriving to the Barcelona Sants station one morning and are planning on staying there one night before hopping on the train again. What will we be able to see in one day?

Las Ramblas and the gothic quarter are good for a day out, just walking around taking in Barcelona. Some nice bars and cafes to be found as well.

Things to do in Barcelona:
Plenty of museums, art galleries and theatres...and of course shops. If you love to shop for art try all the fantastic shops on the streets around the Picasso museum...-snip-
The main Las Ramblas that everyone raves about was tacky and cheap and the restaurant we ate in was third rate. By night it is just a red light area. But do wander down all the side streets which lead you to designer shops, squares, cafes and markets.
The Olympic stadium is worth a visit and do visit the marina area and walk along the marina front - it is beautiful.
Some restaurants:
Panyvino, Consolet del Mar, 15 08003 Born ( 93 268 77 76) - home cooking and inexpensive
Thai Gardens, C/Diputacion 273 08007 (93 487 98 98) - expensive but lovely dining experience
Puttanesea, Gran Via de es Corts Catalanes 618 (93 342 41 74) - if you fancy an Italian
Obviously an abundance of tapas restaurants everywhere - but avoid eating on Las Ramblas!

You have to visit Parc Guell - the Gaudi creation which is very beautiful. I recommend you go there at your leisure rather than on a rushed tour!
Have a great time!

Gothic quarter ?! Did I miss something ??

I take you are talking about the architecture and not the subculture ? (I am gothic, so in case you're talking about a huge gothscene I should maybe reconsider going back to Barcelona ;) Dublin's so un-goth )

I went to Barcelona one day with destination Camp Nou and Ramblas. I did both of them and I didn't like it. I had an unsafe impression of the Ramblas. The "red light district" and big port are just next to the Ramblas, and maybe it's just a prejudice, but places like ports and bordello's usually attract some people with less good intentions.
So Barcelona ? No, didn't like it too much. Maybe I should go back and take some more time to see the city. Still, I don't like the idea of a bordello next to the main shopping street, I like it when I can come out at night without having to look out for nasty things.

As a surprise for 40th birthday of my wife, I bring her and our 2 children (9 and 5 yo) to hotel 50 km north of Barcelona.

What would you advise me to visit in one day. Obviously, no red light zones !!
