Does anyone know bus lines (not necessarily same bus all the way) that run from panama down to brazil? I'll be taking Ticabus from El Salvador to Panama in late June, but I have to get down to Brazil from there to start a new job, and I'm only familiar with Central America. Air travel is not an option for me financially.
Bus travel is not an option either, as the Darrien Gap prevents any overland traffic from Panama to Columbia.
I understand you could hike it, but it takes 2 weeks and crosses through some pretty dangerous territory (lots of drug lords use the area to grow crop, which they obviously protect).
You could try taking a boat, but I have never gotten a straight answer if there is scheduled passenger service anywhere from Central to South America. Can anyone else assist?
Baring that, heading to the docks in Panama and seeing if you can catch a ride on a commercial boat is an option.
You might be surprised at the cost of flights - I would check from down there rather than trying to book from somewhere else.
Yeah, I guess what I meant to ask is whether or not there are any major bus lines after I get into Colombia (that head toward Brazil). I've heard that, though it would be difficult, I could probably find a boat to take me around the Darien Gap and into Colombia. I'm used to taking small crowded buses to travel for days through Central America, but that's not an option since I'll have my fiance with me, who is tattooed all over, as he was a gang member when he was younger. It's too dangerous for him to be on local buses anywhere in the region, especially in Central America with the gang problem the way it is now. I don't think the situation would be any better for him in South America either. I will look into airfare, though. If I absolutely have to, I'll figure out a way to afford it.
Can't help with the bus from Columbia to Brazil. Let us know if you find something so we can help people in the future.
