Hi there,

I'm going to Vietnam with my fella mid Feb. We have 25 days in Vietnam and I needed a little help with a rough plan of action! I'll list the places I've come across and would like some advice on how many days you'd spend there or if you'd even go there at all! I've short listed the following:
Hue, Danang, Hoi An, Cham Islands, Nha Trang, Mui Ne, Con Dao Islands and HCMC.

As our trip is getting closer, I've now finally sat down and looked at distances, with Hue to Danang clocking in at 3 hours by bus (according to Lonely Planet), I'm starting to wonder if all these places are do-able in 25 days? We'd be flying to Hue initially and then flying to Nha Trang. I didn't come across anywhere that grabbed me down the coast from Hoi An to Nha Trang and def don't have the time to spare traveling by bus or train! I've looked at the practicality and timing of getting to the Con Dao islands and if I've got it right, will take best part of a whole day from Mui Ne, so is it worth the effort? We quite like islands, we've been to Thailand and enjoyed Koh Phangan and the Phi-Phi islands. We liked getting scooters and driving to the empty beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan, so somewhere similar would be good. We would fly back to HCMC from Con Dao to save time. If you can give me any advice on what I've mentioned, I'd really appreciate it!

Hi Lauren,

My advice for Vietnam (and this is what most people do) is to fly into either Hanoi or Saigon and buy a multi-stop bus ticket to take you between the two; all of the buses are night buses so you wont be "wasting time" as you put it, more saving on a couple of nights accommodation costs... everywhere in Vietnam is conveniently spaced 8-12 hours from one and other if you follow a pretty linear route so bus travel is massively convenient for most people... leave at dusk, arrive at dawn...

It shouldn't cost you more then $35-$40 for a ticket to go everywhere you want to go too...

You could go perhaps
HCMC -> De Lat -> Nha Trang -> Hoi An -> Hue -> Hanoi or the reverse (and pop the other places you'd like to go in along the way) and still have time for a trip up from Hanoi to do a Ha Long bay cruise for a few days on your time scale...

Agree with Nick. You won't waste time as most buses are night buses. If you want to see exact time schedules for the buses I'd recommend a site called Pombai. They seem to have a lot of schedule and prices in that region. Have a safe trip. :)

Stop those worries ruin your travel. Be cool, everything will turn as fine as it is. I've been to Vietnam once and the place was perfect. I never got the chance to plan my trip but since I had a tour guide everything turns just fine. :)

Hi, thanks for your responses but I'm not going to Hanoi due to weather at that time. I've loosely written my intentions and wanted opinions on what I've planned and if it's do-able. We don't want to spend time on buses particularly as we'd like to be enjoying places and chilling out at night at a beach bar.

I'll suggest my minimum nights at each place but bear in mind I'm recommending from extensive research for my proposed itinerary.

Hue - 2 nights
Danang - visit as a day trip from Hoi An
Hoi An - 2 nights, 3 if doing a day trip to Da Nang
Cham Islands - not on my itinerary
Nha Trang - 3 nights
Mui Ne - 1-2 nights
Con Dao Islands - not on my itinerary
HCMC - 2 nights

Trains see VN website or seat61.com

Probably helpful stating where your starting from & where your ending.

Hi!

In 25 days you should have plenty of time to see what you propose, especially as you're planning to fly internally quite a bit. In 3 weeks we made it all the way from the border with Cambodia in the Mekong Delta (visited Can Tho, Vinh Long) and then travelled towards Ha Noi with stops in HCMC, Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue (we then cheated and flew Hue-Ha Noi), managed a 3 day visit of Ha Long Bay before flying out of Ha Noi. In all that time we took one night bus (was not very comfortable) between Nha Trang and Hoi An - this was also the only Sinh Café/banana pancake trail tourist bus we took. The rest were local minibuses which are very cheap and very fast (sometimes too fast!).

You're right, nowhere on the coast between Hoi An and Nha Trang is that amazing. I don't know about the islands off the coast of Mui Ne - they look pretty beautiful on photos on the web!

Your itinerary leaves out the south of Viet Nam (the Mekong Delta) out completely. To me this was the most fascinating part of the country - floating markets (proper wholesale ones not the fake circuses you get in Thailand), a life based entirely around water. Perhaps take a look at that as well, it might tempt you.

Happy travels!

Hi,
Thank you both for your responses. I had actually listed the places in the order I intended to visit but I realise I didn't point it that out! Due to my bf breaking his foot, we now actually have 6 weeks to travel so maybe not so much flying as not in as much of a hurry. I hadn't looked into the Mekong Delta but most certainly will now, especially with more time on our hands :-) thanks again :-)
