Hello fellow travelers!!

I will be landing in Lima on the 25th of January. I have exactly one month until I need to be in Salta, Argentina to start a new job! This is all very exciting for me- I am new to international traveling and especially going at it alone! The only activity on my checklist of things to do during this one month of free time is to do the full circuit at Torres Del Paine (I've always wanted to go and I think now is the perfect time to go!)... Unfortunately I only have about $1200 to spend during this month- is it possible to go Lima->Torres Del Paine->Salta all in one month under $1200? here is what I know- please feel free to advise me on any of this:

1. since I am limited in time I will need to fly down to Punta Arenas... is there a cheaper/close city to fly out of than Lima? or is there a cheaper city to land in than Punta Arenas-like Puetro Montt or perhaps a southern city in Argentina?

1.5. my other idea was to spend about a week via bus getting from Lima to Santiago, then buy a airline ticket to Punta Arenas (since flights from Santiago to PA seem more reasonably priced). Do you think leaving only one week to get from Lima to Santiago is sufficient? Any idea how much this type of bussing would cost?

2. once I am leaving Torres I will be heading for Buenos Aires and then up to Salta. While I am south I would like to make it over to El Calafate do some exploring and then fly from El Calafate to BA and then bus up to salta... how realistic does this plan sound?

Thanks for your help and advice (I need all that I can get... so feel free to tear it apart!)

That isn't much money if you are on the move. Money lasts longer when you stay in one place for a time. But let's see. SKY Airlines is a Chilean company which flies between Lima and Santiago. You could check the price of flights. But then you have to get to Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales and it is high season. You could bus to Puerto Montt and fly from there, which would lower the costs a bit.

You can get to Salta from the north of Chile but you want Torres del Paine as well. I don't see how you will do it on your budget though, not if you have to take money for the flights out of the $1200.

Why not see some of PerĂº, cross from Tacna to Arica, take a bus from Arica to Calama and another to San Pedro de Atacama or a direct Turbus bus from Arica to San Pedro de Atacama. There are buses 3X a week from San Pedro to Salta (11 hours and very scenic).

Tips: Chile and Argentina are a lot more expensive than PerĂº. If you carry a USA passport you don't pay the reciprocity fee of US$160 at land borders entering Chile but do if flying into Santiago on an international flight, as do Canadians and Australians (the amount and conditions change according to nationality). From 7 January 2013 Argentina demands a reciprocity fee for USA, Australia and Canadian passport holders, paid online before you enter Argentina at any point.

Hope that helps.
