Hi Guys,

I'm just looking for some advice. I'm off in two weeks on a 12 months backpacking trip, 2 months in south east Asia and then 10 months in Australia, where I hope to get a job.

I am between minds as whether or not to buy a second hand netbook. I can see the benefits, i.e uploading photos, keeping in touch with home and maybe even start a journal. However I think having one will be very handy when looking for a job in Australia. No need to pay for internet cafes all the time.

But its an additional thing to carry and worry about it being stolen. I know some people have recommended buying a tablet, but I dont think one would last the trip, they are not that robust and you cant easily type or edit Microsoft word documents. I have an iPhone so I can do almost everything you can do on a table on that.

Any advice would be appreciated, it there anybody who brought one and couldn't live without it, or was it just a heavy waste of time that you wished you could dump along the way.

Thanks.

Hello, i was thinking the same when i was about to go traveling. I never took one in the end. I got to the hostel and everyone had them, including a lot of macbooks! so in the end i bought one. Most hostels have lockers so just buy an 11" or something. but you can always buy one abroad like me. but there are more in england for better prices. hope i helped

Hey :)

buy netbook! :D
- you upload your photos
- you can write a blog from your journey (which I highly recommend). Great way of saving memories and also communicate with everyone who's concerned if you're still alive (as long as you update it every couple days)
- battery life in most netbooks is 4-5 hours so it gives you a chance to watch a movie or two when you're in the road.
- free wi-fi gives you free internet access whenever you want - and this might be really helpful. Booking tickets, booking hostels, checking bank account(!) :D checking the weather etc.

I always travel with my netbook and don't think you should be worried of it being stolen. Mine spent with me 6 weeks in Asia (Thailand, Laos, Malaysia). Don't even remember hiding it to much.

Hope you find it useful :)
Take care,
Martta
