My boyfriend and I are planning to head to Europe in November/December and hoping to stay until January. We will be coming in from Russia - thus starting in Eastern Europe and then going wherever.

We will be on a basic backpacker budget (in cheap private double rooms) and will be saving money wherever we can manage, but we still want the experiences and tours etc. The experience we mainly want is spectacular scenery, culture, and preferably less big city experiences and more countryside local experiences. We'd also prefer low crowds and I doubt we'll be skiing unless it's cheap.

My main question is:

Where would you suggest to go (or avoid) in winter in Europe? This is in terms of price and things to do/see and whether main sights/activities/transport will be closed. I know this is a very broad question so any basic advice will be greatly appreciated and then I'll look further into places later.

Also, where is relatively well prices (I know it won't be cheap) and really good for Christmas and New Year? How early ahead should we book accommodation?

Thank you in advance to any help, greatly appreciated!

More about Europe

Europe may be the world's second smallest continent, but it's a place of extreme importance, both in today's world and throughout history. The grand empires of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome were the early signposts, but the centuries since that time have seen the rise and fall of more great powers.
