hello, I'm going to california next january. I'll be studying at University of California and can choose between san diego and los angeles. I'd like to get info about the two places in order to make the right choice for me (I'm italian, 37, like swimming, cinema, concerts, good food and wine!).
Thank you, claudia
San Diego. If you want to swim, San Diego. You can always drive up to LA for the concerts.
Oh lordy PLEASE! San Diego! Don't even think twice about it! We have the best people and TONS of stuff to do! LA WILL get lame after awhile, I promise you. Besides LA's only like 2 hours to drive to from SD. You're way better off in SD. I can point you to some stuff if you have any questions (grew up in California and recently moved from SD after living there for 5+ years).
Los Angeles. There are many communities in greater LA to choose from: West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Culver City to name a very few. All on LA's front porch. LA is one of two culture centers in California -- San Francisco being the other. San Diego is small town with not much to other than beauty, but you will experience beauty plus much more in LA. The bad thing of LA is traffic and pollution, but you'll survive.

Hmm...gotta disagree with you on that one. There's a ton to do in San Diego: Coronado, PB, OB, La Jolla, Del Mar... the list goes on. San Diego will probably be a little cheaper than LA as well.
I didn't even read the other replies yet. I felt a sence of urgency to hurry and say "SAN DIEGO" before you would decide on Los Angeles. I lived in San Diego for 13 years and loved it. I've been to LA around 50+ times and never liked it. I went to and graduated from UCSD (it's beautiful...high up on 500 foot cliffs overlooking the Ocean). You can't go wrong with San Diego. It's the place to live and LA is a place to visit. IMHO.
Well, I have to say Los Angeles, but for a completely different reason than everyone else--which is the education. University of California, San Diego just doesn't compare with the University of California, Los Angeles (also known as UCLA) in just about any academic area of study except the Medical Sciences--and then they are about equal.
While seeing the areas around the colleges are nice, and figuring out where to live is important--that's something you should decide when you've finished an excellent education.
P.S. I can speak from experience to this question, since I received my MBA from UCLA--and have benefitted greatly as a result.
I don't think there's much difference between UCLA and UCSD. They are both such good schools. If you were to compare academics though I'd say UCSD compares favorably, not just in Medical Sciences, but all the Sciences.
It's not like comparing SDSU with UCLA.
I don't know anything about the universities, but I'd definitely choose to live in San Diego over LA. I found LA really ugly and full of weirdos, unless you can afford to live in Beverley Hills or Bel Air. The LA public transportation is terrible and driving is not much better (horrible traffic). LA is like a freak show while SD is like a beauty pageant. Some people like freak shows, in which case I suppose they'd be more attracted to LA.

That's a good one!!!
