Hi! I'm volunteering in Arequipa from 27th February til the 22nd May. I was hoping to hit Machu Picchu for definite, and also the Galapagos and the salt flats in Bolivia.

First of all, what's the best way to do Machu Picchu on a budget? Is it better to just stay in the town then get a train up for the day, or is it basically the same amount of money to do the 4 day inca trail tours?

Secondly, I really want to see the salt flats, but I don't really know a lot about how to get to them, or how much they cost etc. Is it possible to get a bus down to them, or a train?

I'm fairly sure after all this I will fly up to Quito and spend around 2 weeks there, part of which will be spent on a Galapagos tour (which I'm thinking of booking in Quito because the one's from here are so expensive) . Is there anything else in Quito that is worth doing whilst I'm there?

Thank you!!

Ellen

Went to MP on the Inca trail and it was a great experience but not sure how it compares on cost but it is in my opinion well worth the effort if you can. The Uros islands and the Taquile islands are well worth a visit on lake Titicaka. Spellings may be a bit off but if you have any problems let me know and I will seek out more details.

Wish we were going
