Just thought I'd sign up to this excellent resource and post about my very first solo backpacking trip! I'm from Manchester UK and for the last 10 years I've been working as an engineer in a full time position, travelling when I can and when work permitted me to. I've mostly travelled around Europe on short adventures but decided, when I hit 30 last month that enough was enough & that I needed to go further afield and do the travel thing as I wish I had done in my early twenties.
So, I hit 30 and walked straight into my bosses office and handed him my notice, sold my possessions and am currently in the process of renting my house out to travel around the world indefinitely (or until my money runs out!) ..... First destination = Peru, South America!
I guess there's a lot of stigma around hitting the big 30 although I still feel (and act at times) like I'm still in my teens! What I do know is that this trip is defiantly something I need to do before settling down, continuing with a career and having to, well, grow up?!
I'm new to all this backpacking solo lark although I consider myself to be a good traveller having many trips around Europe previously but I can't help thinking that this is a different kettle of fish! I can speak a little bit of Spanish so I'm hoping this will get me by a little! The plan?! Well, there really isn't one at the moment apart from my flight to Peru! I'm hoping to spend some time in SA and then make my way into West USA (San Fran) and then it'll be either a road trip across to NYC or a flight west to SE Asia and India. I hope to be travelling for a minimum of one year.
Right now I have 14 weeks until departure date and as you can imagine, there's a lot to sort out! Any advice would be greatly appreciated as would your tips and tricks on how to get by in SA as a solo backpacker! I fly into Lima on 9th May so if anyone fancies meeting up in Peru or anywhere else in SA then please just give me a shout and we can perhaps catch a beer together and travel to see some sights. I'm hoping to be in SA for around 3-6 months from May....
Thanks for listening and thanks in advance for any tips or advice!
