Hey guys, im going to be getting to oz around december time, havent got definate date as doing asia first but want to be in sydney for xmas and new year.

Matt - i have looked at staying in wake up over that time, but it says u have to stay a minimum of 14 nights, which works out like £430. as i wanted to stay there, but think im going to look at somewhere else :)

Im not too sure to be honest read some bad reviews on wakeup and it seems really expensive if you need to stay for two weeks :( Im going to travel up the east coast too, want to do Darwin and hopefully Perth and Melbourne but just pretty much going to meet people and wing it after Sydney :)

Would be good if we all booked in to the same hostel :) Im so scared but excited, has anyone booked internal flights before they go or just booking it when you are over there? I don't know what would be cheaper!

Ohhh I done this post and havnt replied in a while its so confusing! So guys how long in advance do u need to get ur visa applied for???? Xx

I would say about a month although it usually comes through in a few days to a week :)! Do you get flights cheaper if you book well in advance? Is everyone just booking a one way or an open return?

It would be cool to all book the same hostel! It only says one week through the wakeup website! I'm easy though!
I think I'm going to book a return flight but apparently it's straightforward if you want to change your mind, and I was thinking of getting the bus around, been looking at Greyhound! x

I'm from Melbourne and I should be around late 2013 / early 2014.

£6000 would be pushing it for 6 months if you aren't planning to work; it works out to about $350 aud / week, and I reckon you'd struggle to live off that in Australia. Hostel living alone will cost $30+ a night - which is already $210 a week - giving you $20 a day to spend on the rest of your life. And food, beer, and travel ain't cheap either. Tricky. Of course if you stay with friends / couchsurfing etc then you could probably pull it off. But hell, I spend more than that in Eastern Europe, and I'm frugal with my cash.

Personally I'd try and save at least £10,000 for that trip, but if you don't, you'll find a way, everyone always does :)

In terms of flights, 2 weeks in advance is fine. You can pick up a flight from Melbourne to Sydney for under $40 in that time frame.
