Really vague question here, but I'll give it a shot anyway . . . am planning to head off for 6 months travel.
Just two problems - 1. I'm not sure where to go and, 2. I haven't travelled alone before so would love to hear of anyone's experiences (good or bad!)
Obviously SE Asia and Aus/NZ are the most popular choices and with good reason. Theres loads to see and do, it is so easy to meet people along the way, and it's basically a great experience. Travelling around SE Asia is cheap and easy, no problems with language barriers and the food and night life is great. I think exactly the same probably goes for Aus/NZ but costs more. Most people who contribute to this forum have done the travelling along thing, and you don't stay alone for long if you want the company of fellow travellers. Security wise it's not a problem as long as you use your common sense. Nobody on this site will say anything to put you off going because we've all been there, got the t'shirt, and the great memories.
Russia is where I recommend.
I went there for my first "alone" adventure. For me I wanted to go somewhere somewhat less travelled. Somewhere that everyone in my graduating class hasn't been to
It was an amazing journey, and like all countries there are plenty of people to meet up with if thats your thing!
There are quite a few threads and posts here about travelling alone that may give you some inspiration. I have nothing but good things to say about travelling on your own. You may be alone but you'll never be lonely!
I see from your pr0file that you are from Ireland... As a first trip by yourself, why don't you make a tour of Europe? Even if you have been to a couple of countries with your family, I'm sure there is lots still to discover!! If you are budget tight, Eastern Europe is cheaper apparently... And you won't have to pay as much on airplane ticket as if you where going to Asia or Australia!!
