Hi

I am a first time traveller and am very overwhelmed to be honest.

Any tips/tricks on how to find cheap plane tickets? (ie. purchase very early or last minute? travel agent vs website?)

thanks :)

First of all you should know that the days of cheap travel are really over, but if you use an airfare search engine, you can find the cheaper days to travel. I like Google's ITA Matrix, but Kayak and Momondo are 2 others. You don't purchase there - best to purchase from the airline's website, and you should search immediately before you want to buy - the fare category that has the lowest price (not the class such as economy) can sell out in seconds.

Not all airlines are listed on these engines - certain airlines in certain markets are known to be cheaper. Aeroflot from Europe to Asia and America, Aer Lingus and Icelandair from the States to Europe, and the long haul LCC's like Air Asia X, Jetstar, Air Transat, Air Berlin and Condor to various parts of the world.

If you use ITA Matrix, my favorite engine, be sure to use the calendar option - you can have it show prices in almost any currency. Always book online for a cheaper fare - using any human being to book with will just jack up the price.

(don't expect many bargains at peak times like Christmas, Chinese NY or in June and July)

Low budget airlines are the cheapest way to reach the city you want to visit. In Europe they go to the airports little far away from the center. Important: book the flight very early!

-snip- --- there you find some good deals.

If you're flexible about your time of departure and got some nerve, last minute offers at charter vacation companies on flights only can to charter destinations be available...

Sometimes charter companies will let you buy a seat on a flight that isn't filled up.. But that's usually with days notice...

Best advise would be looking on search engines at least half a year ahead.. Generally I find it cheaper to book on the airlines homepages than places like expedia (though they sometimes have some good deals)..
