Quoting Peter

You're thinking of Gelli (Rich)

That's the one - I'm somewhat envious of his travels, but at the same time not sure if I could quite do all that! :)

Interesting to see the diversity of responses, that my inquiry created. We people are different, have various interests and are curious of various things :)

I apologise if I offended somebody with my question. Some people are not interested to keep account of their travelling (like most of my friends), some people are, and some of the wierdest ones of us are even interested to compare with others (... and most of people are not interested on this website at all) As a note, I've inserted most of my trips only one-way (since inserting all return trips would make the map so fuzzy) and excluded a large amount of business travelling between the same (dull) cities. The number of countries is right (however, wondering what is the definition of country here?), but the kilometres less than 50% of total (and now I'm also spooked by possibly missing my name in the top 10 list )

I'm not sure how to characterise those, who insert "fake" travels here (or into Most Travelled People.com). Travel dreamers? Hallusinators? This is something I find difficult to understand. I guess it's driven by social pressure. What kind of therapy could help here?

To get in the top 10 you'd need to enter the trips as round trips and probably insert all those boring business trips too.. Current top 20 list I exported starts at 1.3 million kms. There's a few in there that don't belong though (one reason why automated rankings aren't possible). For example, they have mapped each trip individually and then also made extra trip maps with various travels grouped together. So I'm not quite sure what the real threshold is for the top 10. But it's definitely very, very high.

Countries are always hard to define. And in the maps they might even be slightly different than on the rest of the site. Because we rely on other APIs to give us that information, sometimes they don't recognize the same countries that we do.

I think maybe the wording "Champion of Travellerspoint" has rubbed people up the wrong way a bit. But otherwise, I actually quite like seeing what other people have got up to. And particularly those that have done a lot of overland travel too.

It's all a moot point because this guy kicks everyone's ass.

Insane.

Kind of funny how he refers to Europe as having "states"

Yeah... that's weird. I'm betting a bad editor...

ppihlaja and Peter, I am not offended in anyway... Travelling more then 3.5 million miles....ouch. Not sure I would even want the crown!

Some people are always going to want to visit more countries/national parks/cities of 1million people or more/whatever, just to say they have. They are collectors in the same way that some people collect stamps, visiting sports grounds, or signed books by certain authors. I also know that some people will always want to be able to compare themselves against other travellers. And if that is what they want out of their travels and get something out of it, then who are we to argue? I have read about the guy Graham who visited everywhere by surface before. To me it's nuts, but he obviously enjoyed himself, has his story and i'm happy that he made it. He also had his plan of doing it and doing it as quick as possible: That was his goal, not to see as much as possible and take it easy, and he achieved that goal. It's not something that I or many others would probably ever want to do, but that isn't the point.

Most of the people on TP seem to have different styles and reasons to travel, and they are equally valid. It generally doesn't seem a place to show off who has been to most, but if that is what people want to do then fine. As some are aware, i have a particular style of travel (which is for historic, occasional medical, and now mostly stubborn reasons) which some people seem to like and others don't, and i certainly don't have any problem with people thinking I am mad and/or choosing to travel a different way. Providing we are all happy doing our thing, so what.

The distance of the top 3 travels here is huge, and of course, well done. I'm also impressed they have had the time to physically log that many/that much distance! I know that most of my early travels exist here solely as a country name (a hangover from the old TP system of several years ago before maps existed), not as trips or even number of visits of which there were often many. But i don't have the time, interest or energy to turn each of them into trips, and the thought of adding business trips (i have spent most of the last 15years travelling for business) just scares me. I'm quite happy to be just another average TP member, and these days, occasional contributor.

As to who is the champion of travellerspoint? To my mind, If we ignore the obvious claims of the Daams clan and other staff and moderators, we all are. The thousands of people that travel, or just ask questions or just help out, but spend their time contributing to the community and the richness of information available is what makes TP great, and some 16year old kid or 58year old widower that has never been outside his own state or country but is just starting to get the bug and ask questions before his first trip is as much a champion as somebody who has travelled 3.5million miles.

(somebody pointed me towards this thread, and as i had a spare 30mins, i thought i chuck up a reply. Sorry it's so long. I now return to my scheduled hibernation!)
