Ok, well I decided to go ahead and make that happen. So two changes up today..

1. Tripstops that are already in the past now will collapse, bringing the first stop that has a future date up much higher.

2. If you hover over the arrival date on the left it will show you extra details (day of week, year and departure date). Best way I could think of doing that while also keeping the layout as clean as possible. In the new collapsed view, you can see both arrival and departure date.

Let me know what you think - particularly about the collapsing.. it's a tricky business getting that right ;)

Awesome, and sorted :)

I just wanted to say thanks Peter. I'm extremely happy now :-)

I know a few people have posted feature wishlists, so I hope you don't mind me adding mine too: it'd be great to see some improved output options. As much as I love TP, I don't always have constant connectivity when on the road, so sometimes offline access to my trip information from Planner would be handy. I know you already offer CSV export, but something along the lines of PDF export, a mobile site nicely formatted for small screens, or a specific hardcopy 'media=print' style-sheet would be lovely.

Thanks again - keep up the great work!

Sure yes -- aside from any bugs, feature wishlists are what I want to know about most! Being able to print the trip plan out nicely is high on the priority list already, so consider your vote added to that :) Some preliminary work already done to allow PDF export, but it needs more refining first. Hopefully in the next week or two it will be ready.

We do have a mobile site, but the planner isn't adapted to that yet. And there is also some print stylesheet handling on this site (through the main site css file), but again not tailored to the planner at the moment.

Hi spiderface, I'm sorry you don't like it. But how does it affect the use of the site for you? You can easily just not use it.

hi peter, thanks reply.
yeah, im not using it perse, but when i used to enter a stop on my travel map, eg. new place, date arriving, date leaving, i could also enter the place we stayed, under notes, now i have to go to travel planner to enter a note....i think thats right? its a pain as i sometimes have v. limited internet access and need to enter stuff v. quickly. im only entering where we stay so its not a lot of info, but the planner makes this harder....
anyway, its not a big gripe, just a mini one! i love doing my blog on TP : )

Oh I see.. Yes, I had to separate the notes out to avoid confusion. Will try and bring that back into the map view at some stage.

I did notice after you posted that your trip has over 200 stops on it, so could definitely see how the planner view is not ideal with that many stops! We made a change this week to help with that by collapsing all the stops that lie in the past. So it should at least be a lot more compact for you now than what it was before. Still not quite as quick as what you had in the past of course, but an improvement hopefully.

hi peter, thanks for reply....glad you saw what i meant! the collapsed view is better than it was for me, and i will get used to the changes....but entering notes in map view was best for me, and maybe for others will lots of stops! i havent finished yet either! so will maybe get to 500+ stops....thanks again for getting back to me so quickly though : )

While I have been a long time user of TripAdvisor I am new to TravellersPoint

TripAdvisor have recently destroyed the usability of their Saved Trips function with some ill conceived design changes so I was very interested to receive the TravellersPoint News letter announcing the new Trip Planner.

After a few experiments it looks very useful and much better than TripAdvisors - even before they 'improved' it.

I have noticed a few things that could make it even more useful.

  • Bookmarklet should remember last used trip and stop and use as default for next Bookmark request
  • I tried to print a travel map page and it only showed the route but no map! (I tried FF and IE9)
  • When printing from Planner it didn't print the notes associated with bookmarks or the dates at each stop
  • It would be nice to include a small map with the planner print
  • I deleted a foreign stop from my test trip leaving just three close by towns but it still shows as Covering 10935 km / 6795 miles
  • The Explore transport option does not include bus routes (unlike Google maps directions service), it would seem useful to be able to add actual transport plans in this section including Departure/Arrival times, flight numbers, booking references, links to websites etc.
  • It would be difficult to extract location information from an arbitrary website but is there some way that a map pin could be assigned to bookmarked websites for hotels, restaurants etc. ?

Keep up the good work :)

Hi Mymsman, glad to hear it's filling a need :)

On the things you mentioned, at least one of these is already partially supported

It would be difficult to extract location information from an arbitrary website but is there some way that a map pin could be assigned to bookmarked websites for hotels, restaurants etc. ?

It somewhat depends on how the site has their information structured, but sometimes we are already able to pick this information out. What we need to do now is get some stats on which sites are being bookmarked the most and focus on making those work really well with this.

Addressing the other points

The Explore transport option does not include bus routes (unlike Google maps directions service), it would seem useful to be able to add actual transport plans in this section including Departure/Arrival times, flight numbers, booking references, links to websites etc.

This is something that could be added. At least one other person has mentioned that they would like to add a note specifically related to the transport section - to record their travel times and confirmation numbers. This makes total sense to me. We also want to make it so that of the options we present you would be able to select one of them.

When you mention bus routes, I assume you mean the actual departure times of buses and so on? Because the routes themselves are shown in our planner view. I think this could be possible.

I deleted a foreign stop from my test trip leaving just three close by towns but it still shows as Covering 10935 km / 6795 miles

This kind of sounds like your stats page was still in cache. Looking at it now, your stats are only showing 15 kilometres travelled.

I tried to print a travel map page and it only showed the route but no map! (I tried FF and IE9)

Printing of the travel map is problematic at the moment. We might have a solution for this in the future, but for now the best option is to take a screengrab and print that. I know it's not ideal.

All other points are very valid and duly noted Thanks for taking the time to give the feedback. It's most helpful!

Loving the Trip Planner and this forum. Super informative! Planner looking good so far! One quick question.... are my trips in Trip Planner (along with all the info & notes I enter) for viewing by me only (unless I collaborate with someone of my choosing)? or are they Public???? I can't see anywhere where there's an option, so I'm assuming and hoping Private, but just want to check. I'm new to Travellers Point. Thanks :)
