If you are going to spend up to a year there, then it does not really matter when you go. For a month or two, I would go late April or early May. Much of Italy can get very crowded and very hot through summer, and parts of Italy can be very cold and very wet in winter.

It also depends on what you are going to do there.

If you are planning to spend nine months to a year there, you will see Italy during all of it's seasons. The worst time is August due to the heat and crowds of tourists. My advice would be to head there in September and make it out before the hot summer. However, if you are interested in swimming or sailing a lot in the sea, you might enjoy the summer heat. For this, I would suggest going late April or early May, as before it can still be very cold.
Enjoy your travels!
