mc1993 has indicated that this thread is about San Juan (Puerto Rico)

Planning on travelling to Puerto Rico in January 2014. Just wanting some tips and advice as I do not know anyone who has travelled here. Here are a few questions...

- Would you recommend staying mainly in San Juan or travelling to other sides of the place (we are staying for roughly 10 days)
- How much money for food/transport/spending would you recommend taking for 10 days?
- What/where are some cheap and nice backpackers/hostels/home stays?
- What are some good and cheap tours?
- What tours would you recommend taking?
- What is the cheapest and best way to get around?
- What activities would you recommend doing?
- Are there any particular tips on safety etc?
- What are some good clubs etc?

We were estimating $2000 for accommodation, food, drinks, transport for about 10 days? Would this be sufficient?

Thanks!!

I quite liked San Juan but I think I'd get bored after a few days there. Travel around. There are some helpful sites like:

.

Tours you can maybe pick up in San Juan. The main part of the town is one street going uphill with shops, etc on both sides, and more elsewhere.

You can travel around by bus:
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico_Metropolitan_Bus_Authority
.

Not a lot of cheap accommodation there so maybe best to book beforehand. The Accommodation link at the top of the page helps, and there are other sites if those rooms are booked up.

You will find some clubs and bars in San Juan but not much elsewhere, except where tourists congregate. San Juan can get very busy if some cruise ships are docked.

As to how much money, that depends on what kind of life you want there. Many could get by very well on $2,000, if they don't end up having to stay somewhere very expensive because all the cheap rooms are gone. January is of course high season.

Check out some travel guides on the island to see what you want to visit.

Hi -

A few months ago I traveled to Puerto Rico for 11 days. We spent the first five days in Carolina at the Courtyard Marriott Isla Verde, then traveled east to Rio Grande for four days and then spent two days at the Luquillo Sun Rise Beach Inn in Luquillo (very affordable). We are glad we decided to hop around the island as we would've found ourselves bored had we stayed in one neighborhood the entire 11 days. We rented a car the entire time and are glad we did.

We did the BioBay kayak tour out of Fajardo and loved it. We also did horseback riding - through the rainforest and on the beach. It was based out of a stable in Rio Grande, really close to the Wyndham. Ask your concierge or a local for information on that. Highly recommended.

Enjoy your trip!
Abbie

Thank you so much for your help! Yeah one main worry is the cost of accommodation. How much roughly were the yours because we're very keen on the bioluminescent bay! Another option is considering Cuba or the Dominican public. Has anyone been to either of those places? What about public transport did you use it?
