Hi!

I want to travel South America next year 2014, I am 22 and I will be travelling alone from Australia.

What is the best time of the year to experience the warmest weather in most places?

Places- Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Urusuay and Brazil and maybe the Caribbean after :)

Also because I'm travelling alone what are the better tour company's for safety and for younger travelers?

Thanks :) & looking forward to some replies

For safety, I would not go to Mexico. An average of ten thousand are killed there each year for the past several years in the ongoing drug wars.

On a number of visits, I have been to those countries, except Bolivia in late November into December and had great weather. Which does not mean that you will. Weather is changeable.

I have been on a few Caribbean cruises (you get to see many islands per trip, and every island is different) which to me is the best way to see the islands, but you need to go with someone else as traveling lone is prohibitively expensive. I went late in the year and had great weather. June to August, weather can be VERY bad there.

If you only go to one island, try Cuba.

I would think safety would be of prime concern with any tour company. But maybe look for ones that aims for your own age group then it is just a matter of shopping around for the itinerary and the price you want.

Warmest weather in some of those places can be rather hot.

Peru has it's best weather from May through to September(in my opinion) - it's dry in the highlands and not too hot on the coast. If you're looking for the hottest time of year on the coast then travel January/February time as it's the peak of the summer - the highlands are pretty wet that time of year though.

Thanks for your useful information! I didn't know that Mexico was still so dangerous so I might scratch that off the list. I'm thinking Ill probably go in May as this is the best time to visit Machu Picchu- I just have to decide on the right tour now. If you can recommend any cruises or tours for the carribbean Islands that would be great! Thanks

Hi,
I don't think you should be put off going to Mexico most of the people killed are linked to the drug trafficking etc. As far as safety is concerned I'm just back from 10 months in Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and Peru and most of the time felt safe. Take sensible precaution with your valuables and use reputable bus companies, most of the hostels will advise you. La Paz in Bolivia is a pretty dodgy place.
The only real incident was a taxi driver who picked my pocket and that was in a sleepy little town in the mountains.
Happy to share experiences of places if you want more info:)

I'd go during the summer months at the beginning of the year, this way you get to experience carnival in Brazil :)
