Hi all,

Due to a change in plans it looks like I'm now going on my own to Australia instead of with a friend as originally planned. I was hoping someone might be able to offer some tips and advice for a slightly nervous first time traveller!

I'm not set on a date yet but am hoping to go in May or June this year. At the moment I'm thinking of going to Melbourne or Sydney, I don't really have much to base my decision on though so any help you could offer would be great!

Also, if anyone's planning on going at a similar time and is looking for a buddy let me know! It'd be good to get to know other people before going over there!

Hi Wendy, I'm hoping to arrive around a similar time too you, towards the end of June/early July. I have travelled before and really don't think you have much to worry about, it's easier than you might think! Just save as much money as you can :)

I have decided to start in Brisbane first now but have yet to book my flights. I was considering Sydney but figured it would make more sense to travel the East Coast during their winter and go down to Sydney around New Year and Melbourne after that. There will still be loads of backpackers wherever you decide to start tho. I am also going alone at the moment :) James

Hi James,

Thanks for the encouragement. I've done some travelling but never on my own or so far so it's a bit daunting at the moment!

How much money do you think is a good amount to take to begin with? I'm hoping to start work as soon as I can over there but obviously dont want it to take up all my time so will need my savings too.

Is the weather going to be better in certain places? I hadn't really considered that when trying to decide where to go. The way I see it it's always going to be better weather than we have here!

I hope to take about £6-7k with me but am going to Bali for a month before so probably won't be as much by the time I get to Oz! Well if you go In June (Oz winter) it will be warmer in Cairns/Brisbane in comparison to Melbourne or Sydney. I'm not basing my decision just on weather, I just think I will have a better chance of getting the job I want in Melbourne during summer and Cairns/Brisbanne during winter.

What kind of work are you hoping to get? Let me know where you decide to start :)

Well I don't have a set plan yet about the work I want to do. I have a biomedical science degree so if I can get something to do with that I'll be happy. Otherwise I'd settle for bar work just to start getting some money in. How about you, what are you going to be looking for?

I;m not the best at saving my money so my plan is to try and get work as soon as possible once I get out there. I do want to try and see as much as I can of the country as well tho and so I think that'll be something I do after working for a few months.

I have an Archaeology degree but not sure that would be much use in Australia! I have been working as a chef for a few years now so that's the main reason why I want to settle in Melbourne for a few months as I should get lots of job opportunities there but I'm probably more likely to travel a bit first.

I think you could get bar work pretty easily in any of the bigger cities in Oz but if you need to work straight away perhaps starting Melbourne/Sydney would be best but I still think somewhere like Brisbane would have a lot to offer. But we probably won't know until we get there! Booked my flights today so getting excited

Hey you guys!

I'm going to be in Bali as well for most of May, and then my plan is to fly out to Sydney June 2nd or 3rd (solo as well)! Thought about working in Australia, but now I'm thinking I might just try to find some other travellers to head up the coast with! Don't want to stay in Sydney too long; want to be where it's warmer!

I'd always love travel buddies :) !! Or party buddies if we're ever in the same city together! :)

Hey Christine, shame you're in Bali a month before me but maybe then you could give me some tips on where to go! I want to learn to dive and surf before I get to Oz and plan on being there for a month :) I get to the east coast early July so you will probably be somewhere near me around that time after you've left Sydney :)

Hi Wendy.

I was thinking the same as you - looking to go to Sydney in May/June time. I haven't booked anything yet but i got my visa sorted the other day. I would like to work for a bit first then do some travelling around but i don't have an exact plan yet. xx

Haha, good call! I definitely want to dive in Cairns! You'll have to come with, since it looks like you'll be a pro by the time I make it up there ;) Don't know if I'll be any good at surfing, but excited to do that too!

:)
