Book your flight about mid year for the best price. Consider a stop off on the way to break up a very long flight. Thailand is cheap and hot with nice beaches and great shopping, and you are allowed 30 days without a visa.

I'm very envious of you all and am sure you'll all have a great time. October is a good time to go as the warm weather will just be arriving. I went to NZ on a working holiday visa and ended up living there for 5 years, so if you need any tips or info let me know.

Tips on cheap but decent accommodation? decent insurance. I think I will fly via Asia stopping in Japan as i loved it when I visited last year.

Thanks for the heads up Cyber! I am looking forward to it, got a year to raise most of the money and I am on course to do so.

I stayed in a place called Bonds Street Lodge in Kingsland near Mount Eden in Auckland for a few weeks. They offer fairly reasonable weekly rates, you get your own room with fridge/freezer/TV share a bathroom with 5 or 6 other rooms and share a really nice TV and kitchen area per floor.

It is nothing amazing, but I preferred it to staying in a hostel whilst I was job hunting, etc!
