Hi, I am italian too, I'm writing from Tuscany. I agree with what the others said: train is the best solution to move from a place to another, absolutely don't take the plane!

I think you should visit the center and the north too: You can't go away from Italy without having visited Rome, Florence and Venice.

But overall, while you're visiting the south, BE CAREFUL and pay attenction to thieves, swindlers and other little crimes, because being robbed is very easy, expecially if they're dealing with foreigners.

Hi Giammarco, any tips for staying safe from petty crimes? I heard pickpockets are in abundance. I would want to do cliff diving and other wet activities in certain parts of italy. Is it safe to leave my passports/important docs/money in my place of lodging?

Also, as a backapcker, i will be looking for backpackers inn, and do i have to book these before hand or just go there and hope for an open space?

Rome may seem like an odd choice for a destination you need to see, because Rome was always a destination you must see, especially those who are traveling for the first time in Italy. However, this year we have a special reason to visit it and include it in your travel planner.
To commemorate 400 years of the secret archives of the Vatican, the Vatican for the first time, and quite possibly for the last, disclosed some documents from the archive.
Capitoline Museum is the venue exhibition titled "Lux in Arcana", where they will be exposed the Vatican's secrets.

Is the Lux in Arcana this year or was it last year? The website shows '12!!
