mc1993 has indicated that this thread is about New York

My friend and I are planning on travelling to NYC in January 2014. We are students and therefore will be backpacking and because New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world we'd like some tips on cheap ways to experience NYC!

We have a few questions...

We're staying there for about 14 days and want to know if we should stay in a youth hostel or hire a vacation apartment? Does anyone know of any cheap good youth hostels, cheap vacation apartments or of any people or websites that advertise for people who need house sitters?

How much money would you need for food, drink and site seeing?

What are some good markets, fairs etc to go to?

Would $3000 be enough for 2 weeks for absolutely everything?

Basically we want any and every tip anyone has to offer on New York City :)

Thanks!

try airbnb.com for lodging (mostly apartments - both shared and private)

Manhattan is the expensive part of NYC - save money by staying in one of the other areas (Brooklyn, Queens or even in New Jersey)

Yes, I think you have enough cash. The advantage of an apartment is that you can cook some of your meals and save on high restaurant and tipping prices (an apartment host can also help you around the city)

Dec/Jan is not exactly the best weather anywhere in the States!
