I'm planning on being in Australia in September this year and wondering what the consensus is from people about lining up work or to wing it when I get there?
As I'm planning to arrive alone I don't want to leave it too open to chance, but then I still don't know 100% where I should head to first! Any suggestions?
Would love to hear from anyone with experience, or who'll be over there the end of this year!
im having the same dilema! I arrive at the end of may in sydeny and not really sure how these things work!? im thinking of starting off with one of the companies that put you up for a week and help you get work but not sure if its wasting money!
I had been looking at the same thing, but it seems like it is such a lot of money when I could do everything myself - though the draw is meeting people!
Thinking about starting in Sydney but a lot of friends have said Melbourne would be good craic...
Thats the main reason i thought of going through one of them as im arriving alone thought it might be a bit reassuring knowing someones picking you up from the airport! Im starting in sydney as my flights heading there but want to head north to Cairns as it looks to be warmer when i get there!
One of my friends who did a programme when she arrived said that the tax she was repaid was pretty much what she'd spent on going with them - do I guess it would even out!
I'm wondering if I can meet people when I'm out there through the youth hostels?
I've heard good things about Melbourne but then I'm going out in September when it might be warmer? Maybe work for a bit and then head up the coast. There's just so many things to consider!!
Do you have any idea of the type of work you want to find?
i think STA are having a sale on them at the moment and the reviews are really good, im sure you can meet people in hostels though iv heard that alot of people meet life long friends in them an end up travelling with them!
im struggeling because id like to go to melbourne but with me only having 5 months im not sure how i can do it with it been south of Sydney and everything else being further up the east coast! I know its a bit daunting i dont want to overplan as you want to relax and enjoy it but like you say there is so many things to consider!
work wise i think id like to do something a bit different to my office job, maybe some bar work and would like to do fruit picking but not sure where i can do that as its winter there when i go!! have you got anyhing in mind?
I'm in exactly the same boat...thinking of heading out at the end of September but have no idea where to start. Stuck between Melbourne and Cairns.... I've heard Melbourne is lovely but thinking maybe Cairns as I've heard it will be warmer there. I also want to do something different to the office job I currently do!
I've backpacked alone before but some how this seems a lot more daunting!
iv been told the oz experience from STA is a really good way to travel and meet fellow travellers its a bus pass for certain routes, im going to see them on 3rd April for some help as its getting scarily close and i still have no idea what im doing!!
Will let you know what they have to say! I really want to go the kangaroo island aswell but again thats south of Sydney!!
Your's is so close! Do you mind me asking why May? I thought about heading out closer to their summer but apparently it's easier (we'll see) to get jobs before all the other travellers get there so chose September.
Good thinking on Cairns for the weather - just more factors to think about!
In terms of jobs, I could do the nannying route but times I've done that before it isn't the best socially and can be very lonely. Apparently you can work for your board in some youth hostels and meet people doing similar things... Bars and cafes seem like social places, though I heard there's an alcohol awareness course to do for bar work.
Would love to hear what STA say and what you make of it!
im only going in May as I am being made redundant from from my job at the end of march so figured id take my money an go away for 6 months before settling in another job and getting comfortable!
im not too bothered if its not as hot as im spending 6 weeks in thailand before i get there so might be nice being somewhere cooler for a while!!
Jobs is the one im struggling with, i have read that call centre work is quite common but i do office work at home so would like to do something different if i can!
Yeah no probs ill keep you updated!!
