Hi Paul

Australia is VERY expensive. I was spending £1k a month and that was being very, very frugal, ie not going out drinking much, making my own dinners and lunches every day, not going on to many excursions. I would budget at least £1k a month.

I spent a similar amount to Steve, and that was in 2004 when the exchange rate was much better than it is now (coming from the UK). I was pretty frugal - I hardly went out drinking at all, and mostly cooked my own meals but did go on a few tours/excursions and bought a couple of internal flights.

hey, I'm going to sydney in september, going on my own too and its starting to get a bit scary lol, but i seen a link a few weeks ago where you can get your tax code, I'll have a look and see if I can find it again, its like the directgov site for oz similar to what we have by the looks of it, that may have more information if you need, when are you thinking of going?

hey I dont know if you already booked everything but when I went to Australia I used Ultimate Oz it is a pretty cool place that helps you with all the tax stuff and helps you find a job that is really easy to get. I would check it out its a pretty awesome welcome week too!
Have fun with whatever you do!

Oz is soooo expensive. I dare say that amount will not be enough for 6 months, ESP if you plan to be around the bigger cities.
I applied for the visa online through the official website. Within the hour I had the official paperwork I needed. The TFN was also a quick fill out online on the official Australia taxation website--'Apply for TFN'. The bank account took me 5 mins, the biggest issue with that seems to be your Australian address (I used my cousins) but I have heard people using Hostel addresses even. It is all very easy & very organized, but also a very expensive place so plan accordingly!! Just google some prices to see just how much Oz costs!
Jobaroo is a good info website to check out for job related stuff, RSA, visa info and TFN stuff...just general info! Hope that helps :)
