Thanks Katie! We had a blow-up shark but the cats got their claws on it and now he's sleepin' with the fishes. I'll be posting a pic of Mr. I at his 40th birthday camp-out. Grass skirt, blow up shark, pirate hat and lots of hair. (It's his anti-brewmaster look.)

Some people started a wildlife "park" (Wildlife, Incorporated) in Freeport a few years ago. They were using an old warehouse as temporary housing until land became available. A story ran in the local paper about it so I called about a job there. Just so happened, they had no true caretaker so I was hired as Director of Animal Care. (Honestly - these people had no business being in the business and the animal's welfare came after making money, which they didn't.) They didn't think they needed to comply with the Animal Welfare Act and so everything was a battle, one we finally had to sadly walk away from. The "park has been moved to Rockford and the original owners ousted, which is a good thing.

Anyway, there were 2 lion cubs (Mufasa and his sister), a Siberian tiger cub, a black bear, 2 pumas (M&F) who had offspring, 2 pygmy goats, a squirrel monkey, several snakes (including 2 cobras w/venom - who kept escaping their contanment), 2 baby alligators, a large iguana, a serval cat, a red-tailed hawk and (of course) lots of mice & rats.

Many of the animals, definitely not the bear or cobras, were taken to WalMarts, shopping malls, boat shows, things like that, as exhibitions to raise money for Wildlife, Inc. Kris was one of the field representatives doing the exhibiting. I was there for 1.5 years and Kris for about 9 months. Though I don't feel these types of facilities should exist, this one did and the animals deserved the best care they could receive. I fed and cared for them all (except the cobras - one of the guys did that) daily. I set up all the care protocols, instituted their volunteer worker program, worked with the USDA and vet. Basically, we got to "play" with exotic animals all day long, after hauling s*** first, naturally.

The vet, Kris and I finally walked away when the USDA inspector kept bending the rules to accomodate the owners. For someone who is to have the animal's best interest as their main goal, she failed miserably. They also tried to play Kris and I against each other, which was not good. The owners knew nothing about the animals they owned, nor what was really required to house them adequately. They considered them giant house pets or living toys. It was very hard but very necessary to separate ourselves from the situation. I really had a hard time knowing things were not going to improve soon. I really don't know how things are working out in Rockford, probably better now than in the beginning. They had quite a bit of loss after we left. I feel awful about that too.
