I'm leaving overseas for 5 months and due to the fact that my bank sucks I HAVE to take my iPhone with me, something I never intended to do until recently. I'm with Citibank, which is fantastic for purchasing without fees overseas but to do ANTYTHING online you need a phone because it texts you codes. Supposedly for better protection but in my case just an annoyance because if I want to transfer money online I need a code that's texted to me to do it.
I just would like to know how to make sure not to rack up bills? If i were to put the phone onto Aeroplane mode AND turn off roaming data, would I still receive texts?
Will doing both those things mean that my phone won't automatically update itself or apps won't automatically update (in the background without my noticing) I don't plan on using it for anything else, I'll be taking a computer with me for the net.
The best way to avoid a huge bill is to turn off data roaming, and you would still receive texts in this mode as it uses the network, not data. There's no need to put your phone on airplane mode all the time as that would mean you'd have no network so you wouldn't get texts. Apps wouldn't update themselves until you are back on the data network.
Just a thought, but couldn't you just get a cheap handset and put your sim card in there and use that? That is what I did.
Yeah, Steve got a point... I never travel with my smart phone (generally don't bring anything you'd mind losing), instead I just bought an old Nokia for cheap.... Get a new sim and inform your bank about your number change when you inform them about you going abroad anyway...
To be honest, I don't really mind losing my iPhone, it's in a dire need of an upgrade (which I plan on doing when I get back) I was just going to use it because it has a microsim and I don't know any other phone that has one of those? Didn't want to go through the rigmarol of getting a new phone and new sim and getting credit for it.
I'll just take my iPhone but turn off data roaming and cellular data as well. Apparently you still receive texts when you turn off cellular data? If I lose it then no loss, just won't be able to easily use my net banking.
Thankyou all for your suggestions.
