Hi all,

In a couple of weeks I'll be driving from Lake Tahoe to LA. I was thinking of taking 395 then 14. Is this the best route, and does anyone know how long I can expect this to take me?

Also, rather than spending my last night in an unnecessarily expensive hotel at the Tahoe ski resorts, I was thinking of coming off the slopes at the end of the day and driving an hour or two South before stopping up for the night, then doing the bulk of the journey the next day. Can anyone recommend a decent overnight stopping point just to the South of Tahoe - my map looks pretty blank apart from a couple of tiny looking places called Topaz and Coleville! Any ideas?

Many thanks.
Cheers,
Dave

i usually use
http://maps.yahoo.com or mapquest.com for best routes, driving directions, estimated time et al. It should also give u info on motels/hotels along the wat.

Google says 7 and a half hours, over the 50 and then the 5 (this is from the south side of the lake).
The 5 will definitely be the fastest way to drive, but it's also a really boring road. Just so you're warned.

Thanks all,

After much consideration I've decided that driving is probably not the best option, so I've decided to leave my hire car at Reno and fly to LA - much quicker and nearly as cheap!

Finesilver - this will be my first time at Tahoe, so I'm no expert! I'm going to Squaw for the skiing - I've done quite a bit of research on the place, and it can be cheap particularly if you stay in one of the casino hotels on the Nevada side of the state line - check out the Tahoe Biltmore at Crystal Bay for example. I've opted to be close to the ski lifts, which is a lot more expenive, and am paying about £390 for five nights in a one bed condo at the Village at Squaw Valley.

Tahoe looks a really beautiful place, but I can't wait to check it out for myself.
