Farhan,
Phuket is packed with Europeans that fly straight in for their 2-3 week holiday. One of the more expensive beaches you could pick. Not much budget accomm. out on the beaches. There are cheap GHs downtown, then take the bus back to the beach. With heaps of well off European tourists, they have plenty of nice restaurants, nightlife. It is just expensive.

Krabi town
is small and easily walked. No beach by the town, but Ao Nang and Railay Beach are an easy baht bus or long tail boat ride away. I day tripped both of them. One thing you might want to do if you choose the Krabi area is island hopping. There are many islands off the coast that are uninhabited. Worth 1 day IMO. Krabi has decent restaurants to pick from, not much nightlife compared to Phuket. Hope this helps.

Farhan,
Yes, Phuket nightlife is much livier than Krabi. If you want excitement, then choose Phuket if your budget allows. Do a search for rooms, top of this page. Click accommodation, Thailand, Phuket and see what is offered in your price range.

Several places in Krabi are within everyones budget. This hostel got a good review, or a GH if you prefer private room.

Mike, if I remember correctly you haven't been to Thailand in many years. Things change very fast in SEA and the tourist destinations in Thailand certainly do. I was just back in Phuket, and Krabi and I hardly recognized the place. Although I was amazed when a woman serving me in a cafe in Ao Nang said, "I think you been here before, you name Roger" Wow that was 4 years ago!

Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, although you'd hardly notice you were on an island. There are many beaches and a few main town areas. Some are less crowded and less touristy than others, and there are still some good deals to be had. But in July it may not be the ideal place, due to strong rips in the ocean.

I use to recommend Krabi, but its really pretty dead, with the street market only on over the weekend. Its also more big town like and there is NO beach. My vote now is for Ao Nang. Its grow considerably since I was there last, but its still a great place to head out to Railey, or other islands, plus there are all sorts of activities to do from this location. The "beach" isn't really much, but this is the area where its really busy. I stayed a bit further out in a place called VIP. yes terrible name, but the owner is British and gives you a straight deal, and really good discounts on all the activities. When I turned up I told him I was interested in renting a scooter and within 5 minutes he had the local scooter place deliver one.

Thats one recommendation for you, but really go check out tripadvisor. It's been my bible on this trip, and these days everywhere in SEA has free wifi to be able to check out your accommodations.

Sorry gota go, breakfast is coming, while I sit on this veranda in Ubud Bali! :)
