Does anyone have knowledge/experience with trains and specific passes

For the first two months of my trip, I don't really have to worry about international trains, as most my commute
is domestic trains/bus, ferries or planes.

But when I get to Eastern Europe, I expect to be taking a fair few international trains.
I was wondering if buying a Eurail pass was worth it
$402 for 6 days within 2 months sounds pretty steep
and I read that overnight trains you have to pay an additional fee

Would it work out better to just buy tickets whilst i'm over there for each leg at the station
or from the direct european train operators

The phrase, or similar, you should see if googling for info. is -
'Only you can do the maths'.

You need look little further than here for advice on passes (see the bold type)-

part of a hugely valuable site on train travel.
