How many weeks for Central/South America?

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean How many weeks for Central/South America?

Hey guys

I need your advice: I'm going to Central / South America for 3 months this summer and don't know yet exactly how much time I should spend in which area.

And here's my plan:

My journey starts in Cuba. I will spend there 6 weeks in Havanna at a host family. During the day im gonna go to school for learning spanish.

I was looking for cheap flights from cuba to south america but I couldn't really find one (all are around 500-1000 EUR). Finally I found one from Havana to Cancun, Mexico for 200 EUR. The problem is: I've already booked my return flight from La Paz, Bolivia (via Lima) to Switzerland but this is probably too far south to go there in 6 weeks...

Anyways, I was thinking about travelling from Cancun to the south of Panama in 3 weeks, then taking a (night) bus to Ecuador (skipping Colombia), staying in Ecuador for about 1 week, then 1 week in Peru and - if I have still time - another week in Bolivia. According to whether I'll be in the end of my journey I'll take the plane in Lima or La Paz for going back home.

What do you think guys, it is possible in 6 weeks? I really don't want to rush from place to place all the time...

Many thanks for your help!

Cheers
Yves

You are badly mixed up-so much so that I don't know where to start.

Yves... there is NO overland transport between Central and South America... you have a lot of research to do... Google is your friend... start with "Darien Gap."

Super cheap flights from Cuba to Central/South America with TACA Airlines, but you have to act right now, sale ends on Tuesday:

By the way, you need to look at a map too... even if a bus existed between Panama City and Quito they're close to a couple of thousand kilometres apart... an overnight bus would have to be a F1 race car to make it...

sorry guys, you must think i'm crazy^^
It's obviously more complicated than I thought...

@CheersT: many thanks for your help. One question:The sale of TACA Airlines is only for member of Taca's frequent flyer program .. or do I misunderstand something?

I think in the end there's no other possibility than taking a plane from Panama City (via Bogota) to Quito. The prices are around 300 EUR, that should be alright...

Or maybe it makes more sense to fly from Havana directly to Ecuador (instead of going to Central America and then flying to South America).
Because I only have 6 weeks time it probably makes more sense just to visit Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. What do you think?

Sign up for their Frequent Flyer Program and you're allowed to purchase points, it's a fabulous deal.

Personally I'd put Colombia ahead of Ecuador, Peru or Bolivia, but that's just me.

Have fun in Cuba. It's a crazy place...

Terry

Hi Terry

Many thanks for your tips. It's all booked :)
I'm gonna fly from Havana to Medellin, visiting Colombia, then driving towards south to Ecuador and Peru, then flying back home from La Paz.

What were your personal favorites in Colombia?

Cheers
