Will arrive in Beijing by the Transmongolian on the 21st July. Then I plan to head down to Hongkong until the 20th August (i.e. when my visa expires...), passing by the West/Centre/South (Shanxi,Qinghai,Sichuan,Yunnan provinces), doing couchsurfing, taking trains/buses/hitch-hiking... don't know yet..
I think you might be better with train or bus for such a journey. Do you speak Chinese? I think hitchhiking would be fun but tooooooo challenging if you can't speak Mandarin.
studied Chinese for five years now - this means I can at least communicate about most essential issues (not big philosophical-political debates, but I'm afraid this is not expected either... ) - my worry was rather on how people would react if they saw a foreigner trying to hitch-hike...
Ah dude, this sounds epic.
Unfortunately I don't get into Beijing until late August, otherwise I'd come along. Let us know how you get on!
Well, you know, as a Chinese, I don't even dream to hitchhike. Chinese are happy to give help, but meanwhile they are shy and most of them don't understand English. They tend to be alert toward strangers. But don't worry too much! If you want some more tips, just ask me!
PS: I'll be on the way in July, too~
