I'm travelling to New York on Aug 19th and staying there for 1 week. After that I'm planning on travelling to the West Coast using the Amtrak system. Could anyone pass on some suggested routes and also what would be the best pass for me to buy ie a 8 or 14 multi-stop pass etc........
I would really like to see more of hidden America possibly the mid west or somewhere that wont have as many tourists but I'm also wanting to end up in San Francisco.
Any suggestions or helpful tips would be greatly appreciated thanks
If you go to the Amtrak website and study the route map, you will see that your travels are quite limited by their sparse service in the West. Passes, if available, will also be discussed on that site.
August/September will be the dry season in the West - I think you should avoid the southern routes for that reason. I suggest the Empire Builder train from Chicago west to the Pacific Northwest via the Glacier National Park. You need reservations for this train well in advance (especially in August/September).
Thanks for the info
I had a look at their website and think I'm going to go for a 8 stop multi pass.
Sorry for my ignorance but why would I want to avoid the Southern routes?
