hey Daisy,

i have just got back from a similar trip - did east coast in 6 weeks. most hostels are around $20 a night.
cos we spent a week in sydney and a week in cairns at the end we used a 30 day greyhound pass which was about $200 i think, seemed the cheapest way at the time anyway.

have a fab trip!

Also hostels are usually cheaper up Cairns way too, ours was only $14 a night with freeby meals, you can usually find cheaper places that are clean etc! from other travellers when you're away, most hostels do yha/vip discounts also.
Greyhound is definitely cheaper than other buses and theres loads more buses a day etc so easier to use...
good luck!
