I had a dream of one day riding from the states down to argentina on a motorbike. Had a couple of buddys that were keen but have since drifted off as people do.
So thought id see if can find some people that are keen and try fire the trip back up for 2014 even 2015
Ive done a bit of research and i know that loads of people do it every year but thought it would be good to hear it from people that have done it and the trials and tribulations they went through. Ive ridden around a part of the himalaya, vietnam, thailand and sri lanka on a bike so ive got experience on death defying roads so im good with that.
I don't have a problem communicating in general pigeon and sign language but I can see the border crossings being a pain in the behind unless my spanish is up to scratch so somebody that's fairly fluent would be invaluable. Ive got a fairly good route planned that misses general no go zones and ive come up with the klr 650 being a good good all-round affordable bike to use new or second hand from the U.S. and ride down from there, could possibly start in costa rica also or wherever you can find a decent bike.
So if anyone is inetrested on the idea or could give us some helpful information id be rapped.
Hi! I'd like you know something more aboute me before my idea about this up.
My english is really basic, i speak and understand spanish, i understand portuguese and i speak it a little.
I've been in 5 months S.America Long Travel and for the next Autumn i am planning another 5-6 months long travel to all states of Central America and Carribean in a low cost travelling with my backpack, i'm also looking for someone wants to join to this travel.
I am not an expert biker, but i drive enduro motorbikes. I would like to join to a travel like yours but i don't have enough money to rent or buy and maintain a motorbike travelling for months(I mean tires, fuel, spare parts). PS a common matter of the bikers in S.America is due to find tires and wheels for EU Motorbikes, Air filters(have to be enhanced) and spare parts, furthermore, many many problem with some customs unless you give them a tip or choose the right path.
That's my status.
During my long travel in S.America, i met a lot of people and 2 group of bikers, 2 persons form Sweden(they did a 9 months travel from Alaska to Argentina) and 14 persons from BraZil(they did all the Chile and Ecuador from Brazil), i still have their contact and if you need, i could get you in contact with them.
Good Luck!, I'll wait your reply soon.
Hi buddy thanks for your reply, was thinking of starting trip in Honduras as that's where I left off last time I went to central America and continue down from there.
I would also be keen to have a look around cuba maybe. As far as motorbikes go im thinking of now just hiring them in each individual country for a few days at a time although more expensive a lot easier to organise on your own as I haven't had any interest apart from yourself. I would appreciate the contact details of the people you met that would be helpful.
What date and where are you looking at starting your trip it would be interesting to meet up and maybe go for a ride if we can find some bikes.
Cuba is a fabulous place for a bike trip, but presently there are no rental motorcycles for independent travel and it's expensive/complicated to ship your own bike there.
Iv'e heard that terry, friends of mine push biked round it with a tent, they said that was the go, may have a crack at that.
Hey! i just got back from Panama where I tried renting a motorcycle to ride around for a few days, eventually figured out that as a foreigner we arent allowed to rent motorcycles in Panama! Hope this helps you out in your plans
Simon we are planning go from colombia to peru on jan 2014 will be nice have company, we are traveling on r1200gs
Hey mate, I'll be in the Central American region around August next year and am toying with the idea of buying a motorbike around the Yucatan region in Mexico and riding through to Colombia. If that fits your time frame it would be awesome to catch up for a ride. I've done a bit of riding around S/E Asia and also driven one of those death trap Rickshaws from Thailand to Jakarta so am pretty familiar with shithouse roads and dodging suicidal livestock. Whats your tentative time frame?
