The city of Torino is lovely in July, as is the nearby town of Pinerolo. Torino hosted the Winter Olympics a few years back and Pinerolo was a ski town. I visited both in July 2011 while watching the Tour de France (Pinerolo had one stage end there and another begin there the next day) and thoroughly enjoyed myself! Torino has some beautiful history and architecture, some excellent restaurants, and easy buses and trains to get around. Pinerolo is close by and is great for a an afternoon lunch and walk, or maybe a nice walk through the countryside and up into the hills for some stunning views of the valleys.

I mean - it is Italy. You really can't go wrong, but trying something less busy than Rome, Venice, Florence and the Cinqueterre makes for a more relaxing journey. Have fun!

You should definitely do Florence - a city full of history and art - and make some trips out of the city too! :)
