Setting off on my travels soon - handed my notice in at work last week and things are starting to move quickly.
I'm starting off in Thailand (12th Aug) and I'll be there until 21st Sept when I'm flying on to Sydney. I'm looking to get a job as quickly as possible after arriving as I didn't manage to save as much as I'd have liked (around £4.5k for both Thai and Aus).
I'm unsure which direction to go at the moment as my previous experience and degree is in IT/Tech support but I'd also like to try my hand at random jobs that I've had no experience with (Farm work, fruit picking etc). I've been looking at the arrival packages which (for a very healthy fee) provide visa, bank account, training and a guaranteed job after completion; which is something I'd feel comfortable with as not having a plan once I arrive is making me nervous with not having as much money as I'd like.
I'm thinking maybe spend 6 months doing farm work, save whatever I can to boost my funds then look to travel around (no plan as yet). After that I'd then want to start looking for an IT job; thinking either Sydney or Melbourne as they seem to have the largest number of IT job adverts?
Does anyone have similar plans or experience? Or hell even if you're just in the area at the same time give me a shout, always nice to have contacts before you head out.
Alright Mark, I land in Cairns at the end of September on my own, imo the arrival packages seem like a bit of a con, Visa takes 15 minutes to complete the form and I had confirmation within 2 hours, Setting up a bank account will be just as easy as it is in the uk, Book into a hostel, you will find other people in the same situation and will make friends easily.
Good luck with how your trip pans out,
Ah nice one, you got much planned for when you arrive in Cairns?
Yeah I figured as much, I just like the idea of training and a guaranteed job in farming as it's something I want to try but have no experience in. Haven't saved as much as I'd have liked so I don't want to be stuck waiting around searching for a job without a plan.
But yeah it's easy enough to meet people out there.
Thanks, good luck with your plans as well.
I am booked into a hostel for a week, I plan on buying a campervan and traveling down the coast and picking work up where I can, Im aiming to be in Sydney for NYE, I will end up in Perth at the end,
Hi Mark I am flying out to Oz end of September for 12 months with a WHV arriving in Sydney doing the ultimate Oz (glad they sort out bank account, tax file, etc) because I wouldn't have a clue and I'm travelling alone so hoping to meet people!
Sounds like we have similar plans. I looked into ultimate Oz but I did something similar in New Zealand and while it is really good to have everything planned this time I want to have a bit more flexibility and freedom.
You looking to do seasonal work or do you have a particular industry in mind? (I see you just graduated as well! )
I wouldn't worry about meeting people at all! It's easy enough to make friends as a backpacker nevermind when you do something like ultimate Oz as well. Might see you out there
Hey, I'm really have no clue! I'm just going to see what happens but I want to try fruit picking same as you or just find any work that I can! Ha after uni I just want a break lol cannot wait to go!
Ha you never know we might bump into each other!
Best way to be I think, any plans made tend to get changed once you get there anyway haha. I really want to do ranching for some unknown reason and fruit picking seems to be a good way to fund travels.
Yeah I know what that's like, not ready for a grad job in the UK! If I can get something in Aus using my degree then maybe it won't have been 4 years and £20k debt wasted haha. What did you study?
Yeah I'm counting down the days myself. Are you flying direct to Aus? What date you land?
Never know we might end up fruit picking buddies! haha
I was thinking fruit picking and I don't think I'll ever get another chance to do that as a job so it sounds good to me! It's definitely far too early to look for a 'proper job' need to have some fun first!! I studied English and Contemporary Media - so glad it's over WOOOHOOO!! How about you? Ah at least mine was only 3 years you've got 1 on me there!! Yes going to be flying straight to Sydney end of Sep haven't booked my flight yet so need to get on that hoping 30th Sep I think! We'll have to meet up as we're both loners!
