I'm planning on spending June through September out in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia... (no fixed plan yet, open to ideas or offers).
I know there are many volunteer projects out there some of which my friends have participated in in the past, usually requiring training and character building excercises etc., but does anyone have any experience of just turning up on site and offering a helping hand (building projects, informal teaching, etc).
I don't really want to tie myself down to a fixed period of work in one particular area but am looking to help out with projects in areas I'm passing through.
Any ideas or experiences would be very much appreciated!
There are loads of Volunteer projects out there in Africa, but they usually don't like people just turn up. I have been on a conservation expedition in Zambia and had a bit of insight into the whole organisation and there is a lot involved that you don't see as a volunteer.
I would recommend to do some research (www.idealist.org, not sure about the suffix, though) has a good listing of projects and you may find a project that suits you.
A lot of project do not have any requirements, just the willingness to help, although nearly all of them charge a certain amount, which is used to fund the project and cover running costs.
I am still in contact with the Zambian Organisation, so if you are interested in Zambia send me a PM and I will get on to them.
Thanks for getting back to me, I've PMed you.
just to let you know, I am still waiting for reply from my contacts in Zambia. I know they are very busy at the moment, but I will send them a reminder.
