Thanks for the advise Terry, definitely makes it a lot better when people who have travelled alone say how much fun it is and easy to meet people. Reading up on it and it seems Oz is really easy to go to alone and meet other single backpackers.
Anyone thinking of doing Oz around this time next year?
I was lucky enough to study abroad, which made making friends a whole lot easier. Towards the end, I started doing things on my own and found it every liberating. I know it was forced for me to go alone, but I did get to discover London without having anyone else's influences. It was fun and I can say I figured it out on my own!
Amy, regarding travel to Oz... there's NO need to be nervous. You're going to a country that speaks the same language, watches mostly the same movies, listens to mostly the same music, eats mostly the same food, wears mostly the same clothes, etc. It also has a superb support network for foreign tourists including budget backpackers.
In other words Australia is NOT an exotic destination. It's not intimidating or difficult in the slightest; it's a super easy place to travel and just different enough to be really cool and fun.
Bottom line: Relax and have a gas.
Your totally right Terry. Thanks
Going to just get on with it, book it and have fun!!
That's the spirit, Amy.
Believe me, when you book into your first party hostel and immediately start meeting the avalanche of new, nervous travellers exactly the same as you and y'all start cooking dinner then afterwards go out together on a pub crawl you'll see that everything I posted is true.
Have fun and travel smart and safe!
As you have told, you felt alone while on the last trip. So, it's better if you really grab some friends , make some plans to do something adventurous and excite them a lot to take a part in any of the adventures. If they are willing they will surely join you. And as far as adventurous sports are concerned go for river rafting or skiing or anything else wherever in the world you want.
thanks for the suggestion terry . . .hope this journey goes as u said !!!
Travelling alone gives you a lot more freedom to do what you want to do. Don't be put off by your recent experience as working abroad is very different to going travelling. If you stay in hostels and are a reasonably sociable person you will make friends quite quickly as like you said there are a lot of people in the same boat! There are a few tips and articles here for first-time backpackers that you may find helpful -snip-

I am also thinking of travelling alone. Have waited for the past 6 years to go travelling to varies different places with varies friends but someone has always let me down at the last minute and I haven't went (plus spent the money I saved!) Iv now decided to just man up and go myself. Thinking Oz next September, I am genuinely terrified of going but think it will be so worth it in the end.
Although finding a travelling friend would always be good! lol!
I am also going to be travelling on my own to Australia next september :-) You done muach planning yet??
Would be good to chat and hear about your plans and mayb meet up while were out there
