Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Recommendations?

Travelling to NZ at the end of October.

Was looking for recommendations on accommodation, food, activities, best places to find work etc.

I'm arriving in Auckland, hoping to explore for a week or two, then start looking for work to help fund the rest of my year activities and traveling.

Thanks!

When you first arrive I'd recommend staying in a hostel in one of the leafy suburbs such as Mount Eden, Ponsonby or Parnell - they are all lively areas and still close to the city centre.

There is lots to explore in Auckland; try and get to some of the nearby islands such as Rangitoto, Waiheke or Tiritiri Matangi. Also the western beaches are nice, particularly Piha which is stunning. I'd recommend walking along the promenade in Mission Bay towards St Heliers as it's a nice area and a pretty coastline. It's also worth going up the Sky Tower for a great view of the city and to orientate yourself.

Auckland is a city which is mostly about the suburbs and surrounding areas rather than the city centre, so don't be put off when you first arrive! I lived there for 5 years and did most of my shopping, eating and drinking in the suburbs rather than the city centre.

The best place to look for houseshares and flats is Trademe, which also advertises jobs. The main jobsite in NZ is Seek. Good areas to live are those I mentioned above as there's lots going on and you are on the main transport routes. Auckland has a bus called the Link which is a really useful way of getting around the central suburbs.

For food, there are plenty of cheap food courts around the city; also check out Ponsonby food court. The city and suburbs are full of sushi take-aways where you can get lunch for $7 or so.

Bex76 thank you so much for your reply! You've really helped me figure out a plan for my first month!
I hope to house share or rent a flat on my own when I get a job, so your links were perfect!
Thanks again :)

Whenever this question comes up me and Bex seem to sing from the same hymn sheet – get out into the suburbs! I lived in Kingsland/Mount Eden and loved it. I think Auckland is a fantastic city as long as you get out and about and see more than just the city centre.

Thanks Steve for your reply!
Yourself and Bex have really helped me narrow down on a few places I'd like to look into staying once I get off the plane. There's so much going on, for an inexperienced traveler like myself it's difficult to pinpoint exactly where I want to be. At least now I have a list of places and can draw up on my plans and ideas with a bit more direction.

Hi Shellby,

I think I replied to one of your other posts. But basically I'm planning on doing the same thing. I'm spending about a month in Australia before heading to NZ the end of October/beginning of November. I was also going to spend about a week or so in Auckland before heading off on the Kiwi Experience tour I have booked.

I really wanted to go to a firework display in Auckland on bonfire night so if you are about maybe let me know?

I'm so excited now! :)

Hi Danielle,

Wow that's quite a trip you're planning!
When is the firework display and whereabouts is it being held?
