I went to Sri Lanka last year with my flatmate and had a fantastic time! The people are very friendly and there is so much to see there. It is definitely a country that is overlooked (in my opinion).

I was pampered when I went there....my flatmate works for a luxury travel company and got us a really good deal. I think it is safe for single female travellers - it is like anywhere, you just have to keep your wits about you.

The only thing I found, is that there isn't a lot of backpackers - it was probably due to the fact that I wasn't doing the "backpack" route. It seemed that most people got around by hiring a personal driver to take you around to the different sites throughout the country. There are loads of different companies that do this. You can also get around Sri Lanka by both bus and rail, but I am not sure how frequent or comfortable they are.
