i plan to travel by myself for about 6 months at the beginning of may and was wondering if anybody else has / is doing something similar who could offer me advice and hints. my main port of call is going to be vietnam, working my way down from the north and then through cambodia into thailand, as money and time permit.

any help would be gratefully received.

cheers

Its easy enough to travel down through Vietnam by bus or train (or plane if your budget allows) stopping off at the places of interest, then on to Cambodia and Thailand. If you need more specific info about anything let me know because i've spent a fair bit of time out there.

Dave.

any help you can give would be gratefully received. didnt realise just how many different little places there are to visit and things to do. the beaches are def starting to call me. to do pretty much everything on a budget would take me how long? is everything as cheap people make out it is?

cheers for this advice

To do north vietnam you need at least a week. At least 2 days in Sapa getting the overnight train from Hanoi. 2 days at least exploring Hanoi, then maybe 3 days in Halong Bay staying a night at sea on one of the many boats, and also a night on Cat Ba island. If you're in Sapa and can get a room above the restaurant in Cat Cat guest house then the views are pretty spectacular. There are loads of kayaking, trekking trips that can be organised from Hanoi. The longest one i saw on offer was for 13 days. In Vietnam for beach time you have Nha Trang (Phu Quoc is also another option, an island near the Cambodian border). Thailand is the place for beaches. Everywhere i've been in Thailand the beaches were good. Koh Chang and Koh Samet were my favourites. Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui was disappointing, although the night life in Samui was better than the other 2 places. Phnom Penh be sure to visit Tuol Sleng, Choung Ek, the Russian Market and have a beer on Sisowath Quay overlooking the Mekong. Hope this helps for now. I've never really been one to watch the budget but i do find i have more money left from Vietnam - but there i don't spend most nights drinking on a beach until the sun comes up!!

Cambodia i was with my brother, first time in Vietnam (only went to HCMC) i was with an uncle. Last time i went to Vietnam for a month and went up north i travelled on my own. Met loads of people on the way though. I'll be off again on my own in just over a month if all goes to plan back to meet up with friends in Thailand for a week or two and then on to Vietnam and the surrounding area on my own. Didn't have a night out where i didn't meet up with people though. Also the times i've been to Thailand i've generally had time on my own as i get more holiday than the people i have been with.
