Yeah like when I was there last year n staying at the hostels I found everyone to be really nice and helpful, a lot of people who'll be staying in the hostels will be in the same positions as us or be able to give advice! I'm easy with the kinda work il do I don't mind wat I do, I'm qualified in social care so would like something like that. When I was in syd n Brisbane last year I seen loads of jobs in clothes shops when I was out n about in the city. Hopefully it won't be to hard :-) x

Hey folks!

I'm also planning a March '14 departure to Brisbane (still deciding - nothing set in stone) on a WHV, going it alone. I'm thinking Brisbane because it seems like Sydney is the typical first stop for everyone and not only would I like something different where there might be less job competition, but I think I might prefer the smaller-city vibe at first.

I also researched the agency route, but from talking to a few folks online, I don't think that shelling out the $500+ is worth it. Someone told me to look at it this way: tens of thousands of people exactly like us go it solo every single year and if they were all able to figure it out, so should we. Good luck everyone! Hoping to make some friends prior to March, but it's at least comforting to know that there's others in the same boat.

Hiii guys!!

I'm in the same boat looking to fly to Sydney end of March travelling alone, I'm not going to bother going through an agency I've looked into it and it seems a lot of money to make friends when realistically that's going to happen anyway, everyone will be in the same situation all like minded people wanting to enjoy themselves!

Be nice to chat to and swap ideas ect.

Has anyone booked anything yet? Visa, flight, etc? I'm thinking soon should be a good time to snag plane tickets, but I've never done this before so what do I know?

Also, let me share this article I came across today. I think it solidifies my decision to start in Queensland instead of Sydney.

Trapped in Sydney: backpackers can't afford to see Australia

After reading everyones comments I don't think I'm going to use an agency! I hope its the right decision!

Does anybody know if you can start sorting bank accounts, tax codes etc from the uk or do you have to wait until you are there?

Id like to get a few things sorted before I arrive just to take the stress off!

I think the only thing you can really sort from abroad (I'm in Canada) is your visa and travel insurance. You can open a bank account for Oz with HSBC if you wanted to use that bank, but I think I'm going to go with an Aussie one like ANZ because I imagine finding that branch in more remote places is far more likely than finding an HSBC. But maybe I'm wrong. I also read somewhere that it costs a fee to open the account from overseas, but again, maybe I'm wrong. At any rate, opening a bank account once in the country is super straightforward.

The tax file number definitely has to wait until you're on Australian soil. But you get 28 days to provide it to your employer, so that's plenty of time to get sorted once we're there.

My plan is to sort out the bank, TFN, and mobile phone in the first day (or two) and then figure out my next moves. The only thing I'm stressed about is having an address to send the TFN to, as I've read we need one.

You can just use your hostel's address; that's what I did at least, and that works just fine. (Same for having your bank send you your debit card; just tell them not to send you any bank statements.)

How long did it take for your stuff to arrive in the mail? Don't most hostels have a limit on how many nights you can stay? I wouldn't want to list that as an address and then have to move on before my things arrived.

Regardless, I'm glad to know that's an option.

It takes about a week (I think 5 days or so for me, though it's been a long time, so my memories on this are fuzzy). In my experience, even if some hostels have a maximum stay, most of those don't enforce it as long as you're just quiet and polite. There's also lots of long stay hostels, where it's perfectly okay to stay for months at a time. But anyway, if this worries you, just ask at reception about doing this - I'm sure that they'd be more than willing to hold on to your mail for pickup even if you checked out a day or two before the mail finally arrives.
