I have always wanted to see a herd of sheep walking down an Irish road. I am going to be there in January 2006, will I see any sheep?

haha yes you will definately see many sheep! i heard there are more sheep in Ireland than people. is this true or just a rumour?
you will also see many cows in Ireland. Especially in smaller towns or farming land... take back roads, they're so much more interesting...!

I figured I would see them in the warm months, but I wasn't sure about the colder months.

When I was in Scotland, I saw the Highland Cows. Oh my gosh...they have long hair and horns!!! It was great. I have a picture of a Highland Cow for my screen saver on my computer.

Yes, you will see sheep if you are in mountainous areas.

They have right of way on most of the roads, so dont go mowing them down.

Kerry, Donegal, Connemara, West Cork and your best bets.

What they don't show you in the pics, though, is the fluorescent blue or pink paint mark on the backside of the sheep. Kinda funny, really: a picture perfect moment with a vandalized sheep (not really vandalized, but funny all the same). At least, that's how it was in Scotland.

That's exactly what I was thinking before I scrolled down and read your post about the paint marks on the sheep. (That was after a "laughed out loud" about whether a person would see any sheep in Ireland).

I like the sheep with the "fluorescent" pink or blue marks...adds a little extra color to the scene.

PS---If you have really bad luck finding sheep in Ireland, try New Zealand.

Ah yes, those are like the gang colours for the sheep. I mean, they all look pretty alike, so they need to know they're not ramming one of their own.......

Oh, "Sheep in da Hood?"

I didn't know they were packing! I'll be more careful on my next visit.
