Hi weaversgirl - I'm leaving the UK at the end of August and arriving in Auckland on the 1st November. Travelling alone too!

What are your plans?

Where are you heading too between August and Nov? my plan so far is to arrive in Auckland, spend a week or so there and see how it goes and the head north to the bay of islands... need to think about where I want to spend xmas & new year asap too!

I'm arriving in Auckland on the 30th October. I'm spending a week or so in Auckland, then I'm going to a place just outside of Wellington where I have a job which I plan to stay there for about a month, before moving onto the South Island.

I'm not sure where I want to be for Christmas and New Year yet - but somewhere exciting with a big event, as I imagine it can be a lonely time for backpackers.
Have you any idea where you'll be yet?

Thats good that you have a job to go too! What will you be doing? I keep applying but not hearing anything back, v annoying!

I think ill be heading towards bay of islands for xmas/new year... I have a whole year to spend in NZ so not rushing about from place to place, well depending on finding a job that is! Lol

I'm going to be horse riding and helping out a couple with their horse trekking yard. It's not paid, but has accommodation and meals included. They seem like a really friendly couple and have a separate cabin for backpackers who stay with them, so it's kind of like home from home.
If horse riding is something you enjoy, or would like to try, let me know and I can forward you their contact details. They seem to take on several backpackers as their add is still on backpackersboard and they have another girl staying with them at the same time I'm there.

Where have you been applying?
I've been using backpackersboard with a very brief CV and get plenty of replies - not every time but plenty.
Are you looking for paid work or accommodation & meals or are you not fussy?

Is there anything going on at the bay of islands over xmas and new year that's sending you that way?

That sounds pretty cool with the horses, sadly I have allergies so probably not the best idea for me lol.

I read that Aucklanders head to the beaches over the summer hols hence heading up to the bay of islands, that, and i like the idea of spending new year on the beach!

I have been applying using backpackerboard too with a cv. I have heard back from some but not others. I guess I shall just have to see when I get out there! I dont mind whether its paid or free accomm, looking at bar/reception work mostly though.

New Year on the beach does sound way cool! It'll be a totally different atmosphere to the UK!
You'll probably find it easy to come across bar work just by popping in with your cv while you're there? Can imagine that places that have plenty of bars and restaurants are pretty much backpacker out > backpacker in .

The only thing that puts me off bar work is the unsociable hours, when you'll want to be out partying with new friends or doing an activity, you're having to work.
Guess that's the same with any job though

Good luck finding a job and if you want a travel buddy at any time message me - I have no solid plans past end of Nov so will be interested to meet up if you're nearby! :)
