I might have to agree with some of what you're saying there Tsunami. I think that attraction has as much to do with being stimulated by someone on an intellectual level as a physical level. The two are inextricably linked if I am to fall in love with someone, I think.

I believe that you are right when you say that for many people this can mean that they are as likely to fall in love with someone of the same sex as someone of the opposite sex. But for many others, the chances of them being physically attracted to someone of the same sex are negligible - not merely because of social conditioning but just because it just doesnt push their buttons.

I would disagree that everyone is potentially bixesual...maybe a healthy percentage of the population, but not everyone. As for people falling in love with personalities - it's not just that - otherwise we'd be falling in love with our parents and friends....it's all down to inexplicable basic human chemistry.

As an aside:

And as a sidenote: in some countries you can legally marry an animal. .

Has anyone told Gelli?

James, you honestly don't believe only 2 % of western population is homosexual, lesbian or bisexual ?? Put a zero after the two and you're not even there...

Uhm, I for one have no clue on what these percentages are, but 20% just sounds like way too much to me, or else I just hang out in all the 'wrong' places :) What are you basing this on?

Makes for some interesting reading;)

I don't know the percentage of the population that is homosexual, and I think if you look on the web you'll find all sorts of "findings" from various "studies".

But I don't believe it is 20% of the population. That means 1 in 5 people I walk past in the street is homosexual!

There are a couple of hundred suburbs in Sydney, of which 2 or 3 might cater for gay people. I think that's a fair representation of the numbers. If they were as high as 20% there'd be facilities catering for gay people on every high street in every suburb.

I agree James, if 1/5 of the world population was gay, it wouldn't be the 'taboo' subject that it is. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, hell, I don't care what people do in the privacy of their own bedroom...to each their own. I'm just saying if the percentage were that high, it would be much more accepted than it is.
I do feel it is higher then most people think,( but I don't think it is that high) because of the stigma attached, most are not forthcoming about their orientation.

So you think it would be more accepted if more people were gay? Well it would be nice to believe that acceptence was based on population and common practice... but as it stands now the majority of the wealth in the world is procured by the very small majority of white men.

There are people all over the world that do not accept others, not only because or their prefered sex, but also: skin colour, language, nationality, culture and so on. If acceptance was based on population we would have more Chinese and Indians running the world and we would have more women in general running the world.

No, that isn't exactly what I mean...just that if it really was 20%, (which I don't think it is) it would probably be more 'mainstream' and not the small minority it is. :( (am I still not making any sense?)
