I flew from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City about 18 months ago with Thai Airways. I went in a travel agents in Bangkok the day before i flew and got a return for about £120. Flight time is 90 minutes. I didn't shop around for a cheaper flight, but this might give you a benchmark price for air fares. I also flew to Phnom Penh with Bangkok Airways for about £100. You can get a boat from Phnom Penh to HCMC. Not sure of the cost or how long it takes though.

Hi;
1)Buy Lonely Planet S-E Asia on a Shoestring;I done the trip by Bus,Seaboat and Lakeboat 2 years ago,fantastic trip and no problems.
2)Jump a bus from bangkok to Pattaya and stay the nights!
3)Jump a bus from Skumumit Rd, Pattaya to Trat,120bt,4hr and if you want jump off anywhere along the road!
3)Stay at Trad hotel,200bt and jump a minibus 100bt to border 0600 next morning at Hat Lek,visa 1100bt then walk across Cambodia border to Koh Kong?,stay the night? then catch a seaboat to Sikanoukville and stay 1-5 nights on lovely beaches.
a)In Sikanoukville or crossing the border you can buy a Veitnam Visa for 30$ in 30mins,saves a lot of hassle.
4)From Sikanoukville jump a bus to Phomn Penh,3hrs,3$ and stay in the Royal Highness Hotel then have a pint in Sharkeys Bar,dont forget Phomn Penh has no lights and its full of potholes but its on the Megong River.
5)Jump a lake ferry to Veitnam and either jump a bus at border or carry on and you will get to Siagon;HCMC and stay in Dung Hotel and enjoy yourself and either jump a boat up the coast to Vung Tu or make it back to Phomn Penh BUT go back to Thailand via Ankgor Wat then into the Golden Triangle at Chiang Rai and over the Burmese/Laos Border ALL BY BOAT or LAND as you are still on the Mecong? River.
6)Dont make any tight plans,catch the morning buses and jump off latest after 2-3hrs,4hrs max,so Wishing You lots of Good Luck and All the Best on YOUR TRAVELS.I am in Eng,bored stiff,Keep me in touch with your travels at [email protected]

If you're not interested in Cambodia, then why not just fly direct Bkk - HCMC if the money's not a problem to you? There's plenty to see & do in Vietnam

Hi
And dont forget the "DUSTY ROAD" when you are on your way back to Thailand from Phnom Penh,Cambodia.
I will never forget that 3-4hr,200kl? suicide driver bus trip from SIEN REAP to POI PET the gambler,hooker,gangster town(bit like "OLD"Aldershot)at the Thai border.
The "DUSTY ROAD"is a journey NOT to be missed along a(then)no tarmac,HUGH potholes,rotten timber sagging bridges? and DUST everywhere with the suicide driver who knew every pothole doing top speed ON or OFF the road,WHAT a Journey.
When you've DONE the "DUSTY ROAD" you will have done something you will talk about for the rest of your life SO Dont miss out and go home and say "I wish",feel the fear and do it anyway.Good Luck and Hit the "DUSTY ROAD"!!
Anyone else memories(nightmares)of the "DUSTY ROAD".
