You would need to check with your bank what their international withdrawal charges are. Also withdrawing cash in Australia from an ATM other than your own bank's incurs a $2 fee.

Most of them don't charge that to overseas cards, though. (I remember being annoyed the few times I hit one which did try to, but I'd always just walk on to the next one which wouldn't.)

However, I happen to know that daniel is going on a WHV, in which case: You'll want to open an Australian bank account pretty much as soon as you arrive, and then transfer effectively all your money to that bank. The exchange rate tends to be better when doing bank-to-bank transfers than when withdrawing, and then after that you'll just withdraw in Australian Dollars. For the one or two times you'll withdraw money from your UK bank before then, the bank fee doesn't really matter, so I'd just do that, rather than bringing a whole lot of cash money with you.

Yes, context does help!

To the OP: Apologies for not specifying, but the advice for ATM fees was so you can weigh up potential withdrawal fees for a UK versus an Australian account. If you opt for an Australian account (as would be advised for a WHV), you should be able to find an account with no account keeping fees and won't be charged when withdrawing from your bank's ATMs.

Enjoy your trip!
