If you want to go to the orang utans at Sepilok in Sabah, the best option is to fly from Kuching to Sandakan, you may have to fly via Kota Kinabalu. The cheapest flights are with AirAsia which is a budget airline, much cheaper than the national carrier MAS.

You can book online.

Alternatively if you have time and patience you can go by road, BUT it is a long, long way.

From Sandakan you can do a tour, or else take a bus or a taxi to Sepilok. If you have time, do a tour of Kinabatangan where you will see probscius monkeys and if you are lucky the elephants.

There is a small orang utan place outside Kuching, 32km away, called Semenggok, but to be honest I don't recommend it unless you really can't get to Sepilok. You may not even see them in Semenggok and its a rather sad place.

Greetings,

Was at the facility outside of Kuching in 2001. took a local bus to get there. We were lucky in that we saw three orangutans as we were walking out of the forest. had a great encounter with them including a younf one throwing branches at us and trying to pee on us from the trees above. They try to get them to come down to the feeding platforms but it doesn't always work. If you want to see and hear cool monkeys go to Bako National Park and keep a look out for the proboscis monkeys in the mangroves.

I have been to Kuching and visited the orang utan sanctuary. they are very nice and gentle and sooo lovable. sadly to say, the place they are keeping the other animals like bears, procupines, wild cats and some birds are sooo poor. hygienically and comfortability. i think they are better off in the woods rather than being caged in a so depressing way.

I have not been to Sepilok. Here is the Sabah website FYI. Let us know what you think of that place if you go there. Have fun!

I agree with Lizp! Last time i used to take airasia flights to visit friends in Sandakan;(from Kuching , Sarawak to Sandakan, Sabah? wow..sucha long distant) besides, Sandakan has a small name as 'little hong kong' - it's quite famous and commonly-known in local universities. <Something to share: I found the girls from Sandakan are rather beautiful and tender...)

Definitely Sandakan is the best site - sepilok to take a glipmse of Orang Utan!!! Actually, I follwed a trip (press) to one of the sandakan's library near the cliff and the view is spectacular...can't remember the name...sorry. If you have time, take yourself to Tawau and Lahad Datu - it's a place with lots of local etnics and different dialects! And don't forget the market - as what we called Pasar Tamu in Sabah and Sarawak. You'll find some 'used' underwears and bras are even sold there!!!(don't get surprised of that!) If you want to have something 'special' from Borneo, I recommend you to buy some cassettes there - the songs with traditional musical instruments - it's cheap and rich in myths and beliefs...take my word!!!

Hope that'll help!

Regards,
Lee
