Hi,

Me and my friend (both 21 will be 22 and 23 at the time) are thinking of taking a year out in 2015 for 12 months on a WHV to Cairns. I have done a small bit of research and think Carins will be a good place for our base. It seems to have the weather all year round and has lots going on and also doesnt seem to be too expensive (please correct me if i am wrong).

We would like to rent a flat/apartment together for 6 months (just in case we decide to move onto somehwere else), does anyone know where the best areas to rent are? and how much an average one would cost?

We would both like to get jobs in the area that we currently work in, (Beauty and Legal) do you think this would be achieveable?

Whilst in Cairns we would like to visit other places the obvious ones mainly, Sydney, Melbroune, Brisbane etc, what would be our best and cheapest way of transport?

If you dont think Cairns should be our base then places provide advice on where else to look.

Any advice for the above is grately appreciated.

thanks, Megan :)

December through March in Cairns (and everywhere else in "northern" Australia) is the wet season, which tends to feature high humidity and torrential rains. Not really the time of year most people want to be there. Beyond that it's nice, though. :) (Not really the type of city I'd want to live long-term, personally, but I suspect opinions on that will differ. Still, make certain to get to know the place for a few days before deciding anything definite.)

You're also vastly underestimating distances if you think you can use Cairns as an effective base for visiting the rest of Australia from. Just the pure flight time from Cairns to Melbourne is nearly three and a half hours; that's about the same as London to St. Petersburg in Russia.

Definitely find an apartment to rent when working somewhere long-term, but beyond that, I'd recommend staying in each city for 1-2 weeks, exploring it (and its surroundings) thoroughly, and then moving on. And then hostels make most sense for staying at while there.
