I'm looking to visit the Grand Canyon in May 2014 and just wondering how much time I should realistically spend there? I enjoy hiking but don't know how varied it is to indulge myself in.

and if anyone can recommend cheap places to stay with good accessibility? I'm finding most places are quite far out and not many hostels.

I will most likely becoming from Wyoming/Colorado side.

Thank-you in advance,
Nick.

Hi Nick, I've only been to the South Rim part of the park. There wasn't a whole lot of accommodation to choose from. Here's a good NPS page listing your options all around the park.

Just from a bit of quick looking though, I think the cheapest option is likely to stay at one of the campgrounds. First come, first serve. If you have some good camping gear, this seems a rather good option.

By the way, be sure to get up early one morning though for a sunrise. It's beautiful over the canyon!

We stayed outside the actual park - Red Feather Hotel (€58 pr/pn). 10min drive to the GC park. As we had a car was easy to get in and out. 2 days for us was plenty and we did use the park bus to get around, which is covered by your park ticket. Plenty walks to do.
